The Bergh Family Records

Augustus Berg

Some records have been inserted in an old Bank of England Pass Book belonging to Augustus Bergh, Senior, opened July 15th 1828. Capt. John Henry Mills evidently did this and also his Mother Sarah Mills. F.R.B.

The following are Extracts or copies of entries:-

• Ann Mitcalf youngest daughter of the above Augustus Berg d. on the 3rd June 1879 Buried at Walthamstow Cemt. Widow aged 76.
• Augustus Berg - Eldest son of the above Augustus Berg died in Decr. 187_. Buried in Woking Cem.
• (sic) Fredric Son of the above Augustus Berg died Sept 7th 1849 aged 34 years. Buried in Norwood Cemt. London.
• Sarah Mills Eldest Daughter - aged 90, of A. Berg died on the 29 Jany. 1892. Buried at Old Cem. Newcastle-on-Tyne.
• John Mills Husband of the above S. Mills died Nov 15 1877, buried in Abney Cemt. Clapton, London (Aged 80)
• Isabella Mills (Mrs Ellenger) Sister of J. Mills d. Sept 30th 1890 aged 76 years. Buried in Old Cem. Newcastle-on-Tyne
• Sarah Jane Mills (Mrs Mitcalf) daughter of S. Mills died 12 Augt. 1894 aged 54 years Buried Preston Cem. Lancs.
• Augustus Edward Mitcalf Cousin and husband of S.J.Mills died 25th Decr. 1898 aged 57 also buried in Preston Cem.
• Robert Stanley Mitcalf Brother of the above died Jan. 1899 London

• John Mills and Sarah Bergh were married at Bow Church Mile End Road London on the 7th July 1830.
  1. Augusta Ann Mills Dau of the above was born in London June 2nd 1831, christened at Stepney Church.
  2. John Henry Mills, Son of the above was b. at Amersham Bucks, on 18 Decr. 1832 Christened at Stepney Church.
  3. Fredric Mills, Son, b.3 Sept. 1836, Christened at St. Peters Church L'pool.
  4. Anne Isabella Mills, dau. b. in L'pool 12 Augt. 1838 Christened at St. Peters Church there.
  5. Sarah Jane, dau. b. June 28, 1840 at Clapham, christened at Clapham Church.

"1882 I, Frederic Mills' Mother am sorry to state there has been no account whatever of him since he left Mannilla for Hong Kong (China) in September 1874 therefore consider he cannot be alive. S. Mills".

"Augustus Edward Mitcalf (son of my Aunt Ann & R. Mitcalf Master Mariner) d. on 25 Decr. 1898 at his house in Preston 14 Fishergate Hill. I was with him also my Sister Augusta when he died, both his wife (my Sister Sarah) are buried in the same grave in Preston Cem. (he leaves one son Augustus Fredric Mitcalf) who I trust may live long and follow his Father's honourable and moral teachings. "He was only 57 years of age when he died after a hard and toiling life at Sea and on the Shore". John H.Mills 1899".

John Mills, son of John Mills of Shields, nr Newcastle-on-Tyne was born Augt. 15th 1797 married on the 7th July 1830 at Bow London Sarah Berg daughter of Augustus Berg.

Your great grandfather John Mills of Shields was descended from a Scots family (Clergyman). I have heard that their original name was Milne but his parents dying he went to sea very young to make his own way in life - his wife was from a respectable tradesman family of the name of Clark. Sarah Mills.

John Mills of the same Parish Widower and Sarah Bergh of the Parish of St. George, Middlesex, Spinster, married by Licence 7th July 1830. Witnesses: Augustus Bergh, Elizabeth Bunker
