19th December, 1902.
Sir,
In reply to your letter of the 15th instant, I have to inform you that it appears from the records in this Office that Frederick Bergh, aged 25, born in London* was Master of the "Urania" of London on a voyage from Rio Janeiro and back commencing 3.6.1836 and ending 7.3.37. On the 22nd of May, 1837, Frederick Bergh of Boston, aged 27, appears to have been Master of the same vessel on a voyage from London to Zante, while on a later voyage commencing 26.5.38 in London and ending at Liverpool 7.5.39, F. Bergh of Glasgow, aged 39** is stated to be the Master.
Augustus Bergh of London, aged 30 appears as Master of the same vessel in 1840. In the years 1843, 1844 and 1845 the name of the Master also appears to be Augustus Bergh, but in 1843 his birthplace is given as Lincolnshire and his age as 34, and in the year 1844 and 1845, Boston is given as the place of birth and his age 35 & 36, respectively.
I have to add that in Lloyds Register for the year 1839 the name of the oewner of the "Urania" is given as Berg, also that at this period no Certificates, either of service or competency, were listed to Masters and Mates.
The Office fee for the search is two shillings which I have to request you to remit to me by Postal Order.
I am, Sir,
Your Obediant Servant,
HENRY H. MALAN
Registrar General.
