1838-1848: the party in England who supported the reforms known as the "People's Charter". Riots took place in London Birningham, and other towns, and monster petitions were presented in 1839 and 1842. In 1848 there were further outbreaks but the ring leaders were arrested and the agitation subsided. R.F.B.
the name given to the petition drawn up in 1838 and presented to Parliament in 1839 and again in 1842 and 1848, by the Chartists. Its six points were (1) Manhood Suffrage; (2) Annual Parliaments; (3) Vote by Ballot; (4) Paid Members of Parliament; (5) Division of the country into equal electoral districts; (6) the abolition of the property qualification for a seat in Parliament.
