Augustus Bergh, the son of Augustus Bergh by Sarah Sibsey his wife was born at Boston Lincs. 21st January 1809, followed in his father's footsteps and in due course became a Master Mariner and Master of one of his father's ships. He successfully withstood the wiles of the fair sex until his 50th year when he married a Mary Ann Butler, a widow 20 years his junior. This marriage seems to have been disapproved of by his family as it is referred to as a "bad" one. He appears in consequence to have drifted away from his relatives. Mrs. Hutchinson (his niece) states definitely that on his death in the seventies he left no children of his own but possibly there may have been some step-children who took his surname.
The abbot saw him in 1865 for the last time. He was one of the Trustees of his brother Frederick's Marriage Settlement, and according to the Releases executed by the Beneficiaries he was living in Trinity Square, Surrey in April 1870 and for some years previously. He is supposed to have fallen on bad times. His name appears in Kelly's Post Office London Directory for the year 1866 only, when he is described as of Upper North Street, Poplar, Grocer but this venture evidently did not last out the year and he may have returned to the sea. He would appear from the "Pass-book" entry to have died in the seventies and to have been buried at Woking Cemetery.
