afternoon and was caught by the rain both
times; It rained very hard at about ¼ to 2 and
thundered & lightened. I met M Harding & Paul
at the station. I came back by my usual train.
Fournier had not got the other volume, so I wrote
to Hilda, then I had a lesson and after
that I wrote to F Haendel. It is 10.05 Passy Paris. I went to Paris as usual
and met Antoine Mathias at the station.
He wants me to act something at Christmas
time or thereabouts & one of thwo others
but does not know what yet. I went out
nearly all the afternoon although it was very
bad weather, I met Paul Harding twice. Fournier
had not got the book so, I went up in Welons room
and afterwards had a warm talk about galvanism
etc with the Spanish Americans here. It has
rained nearly all day. It is 10.15 Passy Paris. I left the house at ¼ to
8 by my watch, and walked to the Magasin where
I arrived at ¼ to 9, therefore having taken 1 hour,
I had walked quick. Soon after I arrived M
Amy sent me to a Manufacturer, but that is all
I went out, I did not go out excepting to lunch ay Blonds.
After lunch I made an invoice and continued
docketting the invoices; I left the office at about

train & translated 3 letters before dinner. After dinner
I had my hair cut & then had a bath & I also paid
for bath I had on the 3 of November which by mistake I had not
paid. After I came back I read about 2½
Chapters of Monte Cristo to Fournier. It is 10. Passy Paris. I went to Paris by my usual
train, I was out a good deal on the whole
today, I lunched as usual withour seeing
anybody whom I knew. At about ¼ to 6 I
asked M Amy whether I could not go, & walked
through the rain to Madame Bonels where I dined
there were 4 ladies & 2 other gentlemen to
dinner, after dinner some more ladies came.
I am afraid they found me rather quiet. I
came back by omnibus. It is about 11.40 Passy Paris. I went to Paris by my
usual train and met Antoine Mathias
at Paris and he told me that Otto Kamphövener
was here; In passing by the Café de la Terrasse
I saw his head and went in and saw him.
I was out a good deal again today. I lunched
as usual at Blonds. The Sacs Figaro that I
had ordered came today. I read to Fournier

or Saturday and stay there till the 3rd of January
so I wrote home on a Postcard to that effect.
After dinner here I went & chatted with Welon. It is 9.50 Passy Paris. I went by the same
train this morning. I had a letter from Mama
who says something about going home in the end
of January, but I do not intend changing my mind,
particularly as M Bertrand who knew nothing about
my going invited me today for Christmas day but
I told him M Amy had told me I could go home. I received
a pair of boots from home but they are too large. Velon
has told me he would lend me his porte-manteau to go home
with. I have changed 16.85 fr for 13 shillings and 6 pence. It is 10.10 Passy Paris. I saw Antoine

It is interesting to see how much Ernest spent each month. He kept a very detailed list of all his expenses.
Difficult to read (or understand) in the text.
Is this Hermann Friederike Gottfried Edmund Otto von Einem?
John William Jeakes, born 19th September 1852, married Clara Hickson on 24th April 1876. (The family bible states 20 April 1875, but this is obviously a mistake)
Ernest almost always write "Theater"
He also writes "Petite Journal" instead of the correct French "Petit Journal"
The Timbre is a Restaurant in Rue Sainte-Beuve
Ernest mispells the word "too" quite consciously, once writing "too" and crossing out the second "o", thus: "too"
The train which Ernest took between Passy and Paris was probably a line which was 7 kilometres long, serving: Auteuil, Passy, Boulainvilliers, Avenue Henru-Martin, Avenue du Bois de Boulogne, Neuilly Porte-Maillot, Courcelles-Levallois, Bâtignoles and St Lazare. I guess that his office was somewhere near or on Avenue de Grande-Armée although this seems quite a long way from the station.
Kirkee (Kirkee War Cemetery) is a cemetery in Khadki, a town near Pune in Maharashtra, India. Is that what he meant?
It would be interesting to know what kind of vehicle they "drove" in 1876. The very first "automobile" was built in 1769, however it was Daimler (in 1885) and Benz (in 1886) who invented cars that looked and worked like the cars we use today. In 1876 Otto invented a successful four-stroke engine known as the "Otto cycle".
